Fire Chief:  John McQueary

A Message From The Chief

Welcome to the Athens Fire Department.  We are very excited about the opportunity to visit with you.

Fire Departments have rapidly progressed over the past years and our predecessors have paved the way for us.  Our citizens have expressed what is important to them and we have responded.  Today our members are trained in Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention and Hazmat.  We have embraced our community's needs by providing life safety training and fire safety education at schools, businesses and public forums.

It is our honor to serve you and we hope that you will take the opportunity to drop by and
visit one of our stations and meet us personally.

Our Mission Statement

The Athens Fire Department is focused on the needs of our community and visitors.  We are strongly committed to being an aggressive department and understanding our roles and responsibilities.  Education, Prevention, Suppression and Rescue define our purpose.  Integrity, dedication and loyalty describes our department.

It is the mission of the Athens Fire Department to protect the citizens and visitors of Athens by preventing the loss of life and property through public education, fire code enforcement, emergency management and the effective response to calls for fire department services.

History of the Athens Fire Department

The Athens Fire Department was organized as a volunteer department in 1911 and had its first paid member by 1917.  Today Athens has a fully paid Fire Department and is the only paid department in Henderson County.  We currently have two stations and 27 members.  The Central Fire Station was constructed in 1985 and is located at 610 South Prairieville St. and the M.L.K. North Athens Fire Station was constructed in 1998 and is located at 931 North Palestine St.
